Every year on October 16th, World Food Day commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1945. The major goal is to combat global hunger and to eradicate hunger worldwide. The World Food Day will be celebrated on a Friday in 2021. All UN member countries, including India, observe the day.
Why is world food day celebrated:-
Every year, we celebrate World Food Day to not only enjoy the delicious food we eat, but also to raise awareness of world hunger. This day is observed on October 16, the anniversary of the establishment of the FAO in 1945. Dr Pal Romany, former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food, proposed World Food Day in November 1979.

History of world food day:-
Dr. Pal Romany, former Hungarian minister of agriculture and food, proposed the creation of World Food Day in November 1979. It evolved into a means of raising awareness about hunger, malnutrition, sustainability, and food production.
According to the 2019 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 102nd out of 117 countries. It is located just below Niger and slightly above Sierra Leone. A quarter of the world’s undernourished people live in the world’s second most populated country, which also has the world’s fifth largest economy. Approximately 21.25 percent of the population continues to live on less than $1.90 per day. Despite its rapid economic progress, India continues to suffer from high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and malnutrition. The wealth disparity between the rich and the poor has widened over the last two decades. The Covid-19 epidemic will exacerbate the situation.
The World Food Programme, in collaboration with the Government of India, is taking numerous initiatives to address the crisis. The Indian government has also run various food security-related programmes, but execution has been difficult. In 2013, the government adopted the National Food Security Act, which guaranteed food grains at subsidised rates to around two-thirds of the Indian population. However, the battle to abolish hunger is far from over.
