Every year on October 27, the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed. UNESCO established this commemoration day in 2005 to raise awareness of the importance and preservation hazards of recorded sound and audiovisual documents.
Priceless heritage of our collective memory:-
We may learn about people’s lives and cultures from all across the world thanks to audiovisual archives. They are a priceless asset that affirms our collective memory and serves as a vital source of knowledge since they reflect the cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic diversity of our communities. They aid in our development and comprehension of the world in which we all live. Conserving this material and making it accessible to the public and future generations is a critical goal for all memory institutions and the general public.
The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) is an opportunity to promote widespread awareness of the need for immediate action and to recognise the value of audiovisual documents. It allows Member States to assess their progress in implementing the 2015 Recommendation Concerning the Preservation of and Access to Documentary Heritage, Including in Digital Form, and it encourages the free flow of ideas through word and image as a representation of our shared heritage and memory. In doing so, the Day emphasises the role of heritage in fortifying people’s mental defences against war.
The work of preservation professionals is encouraged through initiatives such as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Memory of the World Programme, and the UNESCO Archives project “Digitizing our shared UNESCO history,” in order to manage the range of technical, political, social, financial, and other factors that threaten the preservation of our audiovisual heritage.
Background:-
While the Recommendation has helped to raise awareness of the importance of our audiovisual heritage and has been instrumental in ensuring the preservation of this often unique testimony to economic, political, and social development for future generations, more efforts are required because audiovisual recordings are particularly vulnerable and require special attention for their long-term security. The anniversary of the Recommendation’s adoption is viewed as a relevant opportunity to initiate a movement in honour of the benefits of audiovisual heritage preservation
Activities and events that take place during the day include:
- Competitions, such as a logo contest, to promote the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage;
- Local programs organized as a joint effort between national film archives, audiovisual societies, television or radio stations, and governments;
- Panel discussions, conferences, and public talks on the importance of preserving important audiovisual documents;
- Special film screenings.
