Every year on March 26, Bangladesh celebrates its independence. It is Bangladesh’s national holiday, commemorating the country’s 1971 independence from Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan on March 26, 1971, while East Pakistan and West Pakistan were still known as East and West Pakistan, respectively. To remember that historic day in 1971, the day is marked by parades, speeches, fairs, and ceremonial events.
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE OF BANGLADESH
Pakistan won independence from Britain and was separated from India during the Partition of India on August 14, 1947. After that, the territory that is now Bangladesh was known as East Bengal, but was later renamed East Pakistan.
In 1970, however, President Yahya Khan of the minority West Pakistan province was elected to lead the country. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) was elected president after the general elections. The administration was adamant about not handing over control to Rahman.
The people of East Pakistan demanded independence as a result of this. The East Pakistan administration began arresting East Pakistani army soldiers, resulting in forced disappearances. The Pakistan Army declared “Operation Searchlight” on the night of March 25, 1971, a military operation that was essentially Bengali genocide, with approximately 3,000,000 Bengalis killed indiscriminately.
Finally, on March 26th, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced East Pakistan’s independence from West Pakistan. The narrative, unfortunately, did not end there. A liberation battle raged between the two regions for nine months after that day, with many people dying. On December 16, 1971, the struggle, which became known as the “Bangladesh War of Independence,” came to a conclusion. Pakistan finally gave up.
Independence celebrations in Bangladesh are marked by parades, speeches, fairs, and ceremonial activities commemorating the country’s liberation. A thirty-one gun salute is fired in the morning of the day

In 1966, six historical arguments were stated to seek Bangladesh’s independence and ownership. The Pakistani ruling clique has been operating on the independence of the people through military dictatorship, authoritarianism, and persecution in order to avoid widespread demonstrations. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, now known as the father of Bangladesh, was imprisoned in 1968 as part of a bogus and well-organized ‘Agartala conspiracy case.’ The Pakistani government was compelled to abandon Sheikh Mujibur Rahman because of widespread Bangladeshi support.
In the 1970 General Election, the Awami League won by a large margin. This was too much for Pakistan’s ruler to bear. They began asserting various things. Meanwhile, on March 7, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman convened a massive rally at Dhaka’s Racecourse grounds. He called for the’fight for independence, the battle for the freedom of this struggle, and the struggle for the liberation of this struggle’, everything he had, to rush to the war in his historic rally speech. The Bengali people had been waiting for such a tremendous call for a long time.
