There are 29 states in India, each containing at least 720 districts and approximately 6 lakh villages, as well as around 8200 cities and towns. To ensure prompt delivery of postal services, the Indian postal department has assigned each district/village/town/city a unique postal code (pin code).
A Postal Index Number, often known as a PIN or PIN code, is a code used by India Post, the Indian postal administration, in the post office numbering or post code system. The code consists of six digits. The pin code for the state of Punjab may be found right here.
The first three digits of the PIN reflect a specific geographical region known as a sorting district, which is based at the major city’s main post office and is known as the sorting office. Depending on the volume of mail handled, a state may have one or more sorting districts. In the sorting district, the fourth digit represents the route on which a delivery office is located. Starting with 01, which is the GPO or HO, the last two digits represent the delivery office within the sorting district.
