Scientists have been striving to uncover outer space outside our own solar system and have made a significant breakthrough by discovering signals from distant celestial bodies. Scientists have heard radio signals from faraway planets outside our solar system, which is a significant discovery.
How did astronomers detect the first radio signals from outside Solar System?
According to the experts, faraway stars have been emitting radio signals that have been detected on Earth, implying the possibility of hidden worlds near them. This signal was picked up by the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) in the Netherlands, which is the world’s most powerful radio antenna.
Because radio signals imply the presence of hidden planets in the distance, they also imply the presence of life on worlds other than our own. This might also lead to scientists resolving the most important astronomical question: Is Earth the only planet with life?
How does the discovery benefit?
This radio signal was discovered by Dr. Benjamin Pope of the University of Queensland and his colleagues at the Dutch national observatory ASTRON. According to reports, 19 distant red dwarfs’ signals were detected, four of which indicated the presence of planets orbiting them.
“We’ve long known that the planets of our own solar system release powerful radio waves as their magnetic fields interact with the solar wind,” the astronomers said in a statement, “but radio signals from planets outside our solar system had yet to be picked up.”
The team also said that the discovery of these signals can prove to be significant for radio astronomy and could potentially lead to the discovery of planets throughout the galaxy. Astronomers were earlier only able to detect the very nearest stars in steady radio emission, and everything else in the radio sky was interstellar gas or exotica such as black holes. The scientists further said that though the presence of hidden planets through these signals cannot be 100 percent confirmed the possibility of a planet-star interaction is the best explanation for this occurrence.
