Every year on March 10th, we commemorate Mario Day because March 10th, spelled as “Mar10,” resembles Mario’s name. Nintendo first launched the friendly mustached Mario figure in 1985 – doesn’t it make you feel old? Since then, Mario has appeared in over 200 different titles, and the Mario games have surpassed famous competitors like Pokemon to become the best-selling video game series in history.
HISTORY OF MARIO DAY
For the past decade, Mario Day has been celebrated on March 10th, give or take a few days. Though the actual year of creation is uncertain, fans have been celebrating the holiday since before Nintendo officially recognized it in 2016. Nintendo began marketing new and old games, offering special offers and discounts, and conducting Mario-themed events, as well as advertising sales on some of their titles, when they formally accepted the holiday and began commemorating it annually.
Donkey Kong, Mario’s first game, was released by Nintendo in 1981. Shigeru Miyamoto, the critically regarded Japanese video game designer who previously created Super Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Starfox, designed the animated figure. The Mario Bros video games were so popular that a film adaptation, titled “Mario Bros,” was launched in 1993, but it was a commercial and audience disappointment. One of the first attempts to adapt a video game into a film was with this film.
