Every year on March 24, America honors one of the most iconic sandwiches of all time: the cheesesteak. The cheesesteak, like national liberty itself, is elegant, necessary, and pure, and it was born in Philadelphia. From humble beginnings in South Philly, the cheesesteak has grown into the cultural icon it is today, firmly entrenched in the sandwich hall of fame. “To commemorate National Cheesecake Day, eat (sorry, read) on.”
When Will Be National Cheesesteak Day
On March 24, National Cheesesteak Day honors the mouthwateringly wonderful cheesesteak sandwich.
History Of National Cheesesteak Day
Pat Olivieri, owner of Pat’s King of Steak, and a hot dog vendor grilled beef and added onions to produce a sandwich in 1930. This drew the attention of a nearby cab driver, who then requested one as well. As they say, the rest is history.
Although there are some disagreements about who invented the cheesesteak sandwich, Pat and Harry Olivieri are widely credited. The cab driver became intrigued by Pat’s delicious sandwich and pulled over to enjoy one for himself. The sandwich was so tasty that the driver suggested Pat cease selling hot dogs and start selling this new sandwich instead.
After perfecting the recipe, Olivieri’s hot dog shop in South Philadelphia’s Italian Market began selling the steak sandwich like hotcakes. Pat decided to open his own restaurant, Pat’s King of Steaks, because of the popularity of the steak sandwich. Today, the restaurant is still going strong. Surprisingly, Pat’s original sandwich did not contain any cheese. According to Olivieri, at one of the restaurants on Ridge Avenue, a manager named Joe Lorenza was the first to add provolone cheese to the sandwiches.
National Cheesesteak Day Activities
Take a bite out of a cheesesteak
This may seem self-evident, but sometimes the most obvious solution is the best. You may either roll up your sleeves and make your own sandwich or hire someone to do it for you. Just keep in mind that if the name contains the term “Philly,” it might not be the most authentic.
