Squarespace’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kinjil Mathur, believes Gen Z job seekers need to be more proactive in their job search to avoid becoming unemployable. She advises them to be willing to work any hours, at any pay, and even for free to gain experience.
Mathur recounted her own experience starting out in the workforce, where she proactively sought out internships, even working for free to gain valuable experience. She landed her first internship at Travelocity through this approach and eventually worked her way up through various companies before becoming CMO at Squarespace.
Mathur emphasizes that once an internship is secured, it should be taken very seriously as employers can quickly change their minds. She advises young job seekers to be less demanding and focus on gaining experience, even if it means sacrificing some preferences like flexible work arrangements or high salaries. She suggests that Gen Zers should be grateful for any opportunity to learn and contribute.
