Former Indian army chief General VN Sharma, speaking at the launch of a new book about the 1971 India-Pakistan war, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to warfare. He argued that war is not simply a military affair but a “total affair” involving politics, diplomacy, and the combined efforts of the government, civil services, police, transport, and the navy.
Sharma, who fought in the 1971 war, praised the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and highlighted how her decisive actions, combined with the coordinated efforts of various government agencies, contributed to India’s victory. He considered this a key lesson from the war, emphasizing the need for a unified and coordinated approach to achieve success in a conflict.
The book, “1971 Strategy Campaign Valor,” was authored by a young writer and commemorates the Indian heroes of the war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The book launch event also featured several Indian veterans of the war, including former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, who shared their personal experiences and reflections on the conflict.
