Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq faces a ₹1.91 crore fine for electricity theft at his home in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Inspectors discovered tampered meters and a significant discrepancy between his declared 2 kW connection and the actual 16.5 kW load used, evidenced by numerous appliances. While Barq’s family claimed a 10 kW solar panel and 5 kW generator offset the load, officials found the solar panels non-functional. His electricity bill had been zero for six months. An FIR was filed under the Anti-Power Theft Act, and his electricity was disconnected. A separate case was filed against his father for threatening officials during the investigation.
