Indian scientists have developed a new method for generating truly unpredictable random numbers using quantum mechanics. This breakthrough has the potential to significantly enhance cybersecurity by providing stronger encryption for data.
The team, led by researchers from the Raman Research Institute, demonstrated the violation of Leggett-Garg Inequalities (LGI), a test for quantum behavior, in a loophole-free manner. This violation was then utilized to generate random numbers that are secure against manipulation and imperfections.
These random numbers are crucial for applications like cryptographic key generation, secure password creation, and digital signatures. The method offers numerous advantages, including enhanced account security, resistance to brute-force attacks, and prevention of forgery.
The researchers successfully generated over 900,000 random bits at a rate of nearly 4,000 bits per second, demonstrating the practical potential of this method. This innovative approach could have wide-ranging applications in various fields, including cybersecurity, data encryption, economic surveys, and drug design/testing.
