Elon Musk’s social media platform X was temporarily accessible in Brazil after a court ordered its suspension. The platform, formerly known as Twitter, was banned in Brazil last month for refusing to remove right-wing accounts accused of spreading misinformation and failing to comply with court orders. X’s return was attributed to an automatic update in the phone app that allowed it to use changing IP addresses. However, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the platform to be blocked again, citing its “recalcitrant” behavior. The court also froze the assets of X and Musk’s satellite internet provider Starlink to ensure payment of fines. Musk has publicly criticized the court’s actions and the judge, Alexandre de Moraes, who has been leading the crackdown on disinformation in Brazil. The suspension of X has sparked debates about freedom of expression and the power of social media companies.
