During his speech at the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump recounted an assassination attempt that occurred during a campaign rally the previous week. He claimed that he felt safe during the attack because he believed “God was on his side.”
Trump described the event in detail, stating that he had been leaning forward to view immigration data when the shooter fired. He claimed that a near-miss occurred, as he moved his head just in time to avoid being struck by the bullet. The bullet, however, grazed his ear, causing him to bleed.
The 78-year-old nominee credited his survival to “divine intervention” and recalled feeling safe despite the attack. He shared his reaction to the incident on social media but declined to recount the details again, stating that it was too painful.
The attacker, a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service snipers. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
