Following President Biden’s surprise announcement to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue reported a record-breaking single-day fundraising total of $46.7 million.
Biden’s decision came unexpectedly while he was recovering from COVID-19. In a letter, he stated that while he had intended to run for reelection, he believes stepping aside is in the best interest of his party and the country. He will focus on fulfilling his presidential duties until the end of his term.
Biden immediately endorsed Harris, who launched her campaign shortly after. Her campaign received widespread support from prominent Democrats, including potential rivals like California Governor Gavin Newsom.
