West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited protesting doctors who have been demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The doctors have been on a sit-in for over a month, demanding the resignation of several officials and increased security for healthcare workers.
Banerjee addressed the doctors, expressing empathy and support for their protests. She assured them that the government would investigate their demands and take action against those responsible. Banerjee also urged the doctors to return to work, emphasizing the impact their absence was having on patients and their families.
The doctors welcomed Banerjee’s visit but insisted on a transparent meeting, including live telecasting, to ensure accountability. This demand for live streaming, however, was rejected by the government, citing legal concerns.
Despite the impasse, Banerjee expressed her willingness to meet with the doctors and discuss their demands. However, the ongoing legal proceedings and the doctors’ insistence on live streaming continue to hinder a resolution.
