Doctors across India have gone on strike, protesting the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. This strike, affecting hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other cities, involves halting non-emergency services until a thorough investigation is completed. Doctors are also demanding better security for all medical staff.
The strike follows the horrific death of a 32-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Her body was found in the hospital’s seminar hall, bearing multiple injuries.
Kolkata Police have arrested a suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital but was not affiliated with it. Roy attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes after the incident. While police claim the investigation is transparent, doctors are demanding swift justice and greater security for medical professionals.
