Donald Trump’s speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination was unusually long, lasting over an hour and a half. While aides had suggested a softer tone following his recent assassination attempt, the speech was often harsh and combative.
Trump repeatedly thanked God for his survival, invoking divine intervention. Although he initially claimed he wouldn’t mention Biden, he went on to criticize his presidency and accused him of inflicting more damage than the 10 worst presidents in history.
Despite the initial promise of a unifying address, Trump reverted to his usual style, attacking Democrats and repeating false claims about the 2020 election. His speech was punctuated by moments of both aggression and affection, including chants of “fight, fight!” and a kiss on his wife’s cheek.
